Assignment 1: Custom Abstract Wallpaper

20 marks

Create a custom abstract wallpaper that expresses who you are using only visual language.

The Prompt

How would you introduce yourself if you couldn't use photos or words? Tell me who you are using only shapes, lines, colours, texture, motion, and other abstract visuals. Imagine this art piece covering an entire wall in a gallery, city, or personal artist studio.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Plan your wallpaper

Create a custom abstract wallpaper pattern that reflects your personality. The design can be for an interior wall or a digital desktop screen.

2

Set shape, dimensions & pattern size

Begin by planning the shape and specific dimensions of your wallpaper, as well as the size of the repeating pattern.

3

Make rough sketches

Sketch 2–3 rough concepts for what you would like your wallpaper to look like, playing with line, shape, texture, and space.

4

Write your personal description

Write a short description (100–200 words) of your values, major traits, interests, drives, abilities, or emotions that express who you are.

Submit 3 Files

General Assignment Guidelines

  • Activities & assignments can be done by hand on paper or through design software.
  • You will not be graded on your software knowledge, but rather how well you utilize design principles and experiment with layout and iteration.
  • Whether working on paper or in software, start every assignment in your sketchbook. Sketch quickly and loosely until you have various ideas to choose from — your sketches are photographed and submitted.
  • If you prefer digital, use intuitive software: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Krita, Procreate, QuarkXPress, Clip Studio, Blender, Inkscape, GIMP, or others you know.
  • If working physically, incorporate any mediums of choice such as collage, paint, marker, ink, stickers, pastel, or charcoal.
