Assignment Overview

In Assignment 1, you developed a creative business idea and identified the products or services you plan to offer.

In this assignment, you will determine how much to charge for your work. Creative professionals must carefully consider pricing to ensure they are paid fairly while remaining competitive in the marketplace.

You will compare different pricing methods, estimate costs, and create a pricing strategy for your business.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this assignment, you will be able to:

  • • Compare hourly and flat-rate pricing models
  • • Estimate the costs involved in providing a creative service
  • • Calculate a reasonable price for your work
  • • Explain and justify your pricing decisions
Part 1: Describe Your Service

Briefly describe the creative product or service you developed in Assignment 1.

Examples:

Logo Design
Website Design
Photography Session
Custom Illustration
3D Printed Product
Social Media Content Package

Questions to answer:

  • • What product or service are you offering?
  • • Who is your target customer?
  • • What problem does your product or service solve?
Compare Pricing Models

Creative professionals usually price work in one of two ways. Compare the options below to decide which fits your service best.

Hourly Rate

Open-ended or ongoing work where the scope can change

Pros:
You are paid for all the time you put in; protects you if a project grows
Cons:
Income is capped by hours; clients may worry about unpredictable totals

Flat (Project) Rate

Clearly defined deliverables like a logo or a single website

Pros:
Clients know the total cost up front; rewards you for working efficiently
Cons:
You lose money if the project takes longer than expected
Hourly Rate Estimator

Use the fillable form to estimate a fair hourly rate for your service. The estimator walks you through six steps:

  • Step 1: Estimate your monthly expenses
  • Step 2: Estimate your monthly income goal
  • Step 3: Calculate your required monthly revenue
  • Step 4: Estimate your billable hours
  • Step 5: Calculate your hourly rate
  • Step 6: Reflect on whether the rate is reasonable

Remember: not every hour at work can be charged to a client. Account for time spent on email, marketing, meetings, administration, learning new skills, and equipment maintenance.

Final Goal

Produce a clear pricing strategy for your creative service, including a calculated hourly rate, a recommended price, and a justification for your decisions that you can defend to a client.
